Mural artist and community leader Kristy Sandoval was commissioned to paint the initial mural, located next to Macy?s. A first-generation Chicana, Sandoval has led mural opportunities across the country and abroad, leading community murals in Istanbul, Turkey for Syrian refugee children and their families. The mural at Plaza West Covina, named ?Grow and Bloom,? focuses on growth and self-awareness.

?This phrase is from Gloria Anzaldua?s book, Borderlands. To me this quote represents growth in the direction of being better for one another,? said Sandoval, ?To change yourself for the better, it changes the world around you.?

Raised in Los Angeles, Kristy Sandoval is a first-generation Chicana artist with roots in Nayarit and Tijuana. She attended the Academy of Art University in San Francisco before returning home and spearheading mural design programming in her community. Since 2008 Kristy has painted more than 30 public art murals focusing on human rights, world affairs from an environmental standpoint, and female empowerment.
